Jeffrey C. Fernyhough, M.D.

Jeffrey C. Fernyhough, MD, is an orthopedic spine surgeon with expertise in osteoporotic compression fractures, spinal stenosis, and herniated discs. He specializes in nonoperative and minimally invasive approaches to spine surgery at Florida Back Institute in Boca Raton, Florida.

Dr. Fernyhough regionally pioneered the use of fluoroscopic-guided epidural steroid injection for nonoperative treatment of spinal stenosis, herniated discs, and sciatica over the past 23 years, and more recently, kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty procedures. He is currently offering innovative spinal cord stimulation procedures, performed in the office, for dramatic pain relief from severe back pain and sciatica.

An accomplished researcher, Dr. Fernyhough has published in the areas of cervical spine fusions, lumbar spine fusions, and bone graft pain. He lectures nationally in minimally invasive surgical techniques and holds patents for vertebroplasty techniques and instruments for spinal fractures.

Dr. Fernyhough earned his medical degree from the University of Washington in Seattle. During medical school, Dr. Fernyhough was an International College of Surgeons Scholar at the University of Oxford School of Medicine in Oxford, England.

He served as an instructor and chief resident during his residency in the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation of the Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut. Dr. Fernyhough continued his studies with two spinal surgery fellowships — one at the University of Maryland in College Park, Maryland, and one under Henry LaRocca, MD, founding editor of Spine Journal.

Dr. Fernyhough is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and a member of the Cervical Spine Research Society, North American Spine Society, the International Spinal Injection Society, the International Intradiscal Therapy Society, and the Society of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery

Nathaniel A. Lowen, M.D.

Nathaniel A. Lowen, MD, is a board-certified orthopedic spine surgeon who offers his skill and expertise in minimally invasive spinal surgery to patients at Florida Back Institute in Boca Raton, Florida. He also specializes in lumbar epidural steroid injections, lumbar and cervical facet blocks, sacroiliac joint injections, and hip bursa injections. Dr. Lowen has provided exceptional care to the Boca Raton community since 2000.

Dr. Lowen takes pride in making the most accurate diagnosis possible. He spends time listening to his patients and personally reviews all diagnostic imaging scans. Once a diagnosis has been made, Dr. Lowen educates patients about their conditions, and carefully explains the treatment plans.

He then completed a five-year orthopedic residency at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, and a fellowship in spinal surgery at the University of Pittsburgh.

Dr. Lowen is an active member of the North American Spine Society, the International Spinal Injection Society, and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Scott W. Howell, PA-C, MPH, MPAS

Scott Howell is Physician Assistant who earned his degree from Nova Southeastern University in Davie, Florida in 1996. He continued his studies at the University of Nebraska in Omaha. He is a former Physician Assistant Clinical Instructor for Nova Southeastern University, Miami Dade College and Barry University.

Scott is Board Certified by the national Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Physician Assistants, The Florida Academy of Physician Assistants and the American Association of Surgical Physician Assistants, this as well as being a member of the North American Spine Society.

Scott has been trained to assist in the latest minimally invasive spinal procedures, including eXtreme Lateral Interbody Fusion (XLIF), percutaneous pedicle screws, microdiskectomy and trans-lumbar interbody fusion. Scott also has experience with traditional laminectomy and fusion surgery. Additionally, Scott has training in advanced wound care techniques, postoperative patient management and techniques in rehabilitation.

Caroline E. Rangel, PA-C

Caroline Rangel is a Physician Assistant who graduated Magna Cum Laude with her Bachelor of Science in Biology at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, FL in 2013. She then went on to Nova Southeastern University in Davie, FL for her Master of Medical Science in Physician Assistant Studies, graduating in 2015 with Honors.

Caroline is board certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. She is also a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants and the Florida Academy of Physician Assistants.

Caroline has been trained in multiple injection techniques performed under fluoroscopy and ultrasound guidance including epidural steroid injections, facet blocks, and hip bursa injections. She also has experience assisting in minimally invasive surgery including extreme Lateral lnterbody Fusion (XLIF), percutaneous pedicle screws, microdiscectomy, and trans-lumbar interbody fusion. Additionally, she has been trained to assist with traditional laminectomy surgery and fusions of the cervical and lumbar spine. Caroline is also skilled in providing inpatient and outpatient postoperative management.
