Nathaniel A. Lowen, M.D.
Dr. Lowen graduated cum laude at the University of Maryland with a B.S. in biochemistry in 1988. He obtained his M.D. degree at the University of Michigan Medical School in 1992, followed by a five-year orthopedic residency at Washington University St. Louis in 1997. He graduated with a fellowship in spinal surgery at the University of Pittsburgh in 1998. He has established a very busy private practice in Boca Raton, Florida since 2000.

Dr. Lowen is a certified orthopedic spine surgeon who specializes in minimally invasive spinal surgery. He also uses conservative approaches including lumbar epidural steroid injections, lumbar and cervical facet blocks, sacroiliac joint injections and hip bursa injections.

Dr. Lowen’s surgeries can be performed through a technique requiring minimal to no blood loss. Essentially, he is operating through a small tube with Fiber optic illumination. This minimally invasive lateral fusion technique is perferred over the traditional open methods because the patient’s hospital stay reduced with minimal to no blood loss and the improvement in preoperative pain can be dramatic and immediate in most cases.

Dr. Lowen takes pride in making the best diagnosis possible. He will read his patient’s MRI and CT scans himself before reading or even touching a radiologist report. Dr. Lowen spends time with his patients by first personally reviewing the MRI and/or CT scans, explaining the diagnosis, and finally, educating and explaining the treatment plan. He will personally implement the plan, whether it involves injections or minimally invasive surgery.

“Spinal fractures previously required prolonged bed rest and bracing. Now, nearly all can be treated in our office with kyphoplasty,” says Dr. Lowen of the procedure. Kyphoplasty is an injection technique for which a painful spinal vertebral fracture is immediately stabilized with an injection of bone cement. This is performed in the office setting under local anesthetic. It is typical to witness a patient arrive with a “10 out of 10” pain score and leave the office after the kyphoplasty with a “0 or 1 out of 10” score. This procedure provides immediate and extreme satisfaction for Dr. Lowen’s patients.

Dr. Lowen is an active member of the North American Spine Society, International Spinal Injection Society, and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery. He was recently re-certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons.
